BACKGROUND
Bipolar disorder is not a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood, clinically referred to as mania. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes which present with features of both mania and depression. These episodes are normally separated by periods of normal mood, but in some patients, depression and mania may rapidly alternate.
Onset of symptoms generally occurs in young adulthood. Diagnosis is based on the person's self-reported experiences, as well as observed behavior. Episodes of illness are associated with distress and disruption, and a relatively high risk of suicide.
According to research by Dr. Abram Hoffer, many patients suffering from bipolar disorder are allergic to sugars, dairy products and wheat.
ORTHOMOLECULAR APPROACH
The orthomolecular approach for bipolar disorder examines the important role nutrients, including amino acids, play in creating and regulating the body's neurotransmitters. The approach seeks to uncover any nutritional deficiencies in the individual and also focuses on suspected food allergies and sources of aggravating toxins.
